5 Timeless Sermon Topics Every Pastor Should Consider

sermon topics

“What do I preach this Sunday?” Isn’t this the most frequently asked question on your mind as a Pastor? Yes indeed, narrowing down on a specific sermon topic can be quite a challenge; sometimes irrespective of how many years you may have been in the pastoral or teaching ministry.

It can seem unreasonable to be struggling to choose a sermon topic when there is so much in the Bible. However, sometimes the vastness of the Bible in itself poses the challenge – there’s so much to choose from!

Some of the aspects that you would do well to consider while choosing a good sermon topic is to take stock of the current needs of your congregation, the overall climate that exists in your congregation and even your society, and most definitely lean in to listen for what God wants you to sow into the hearts of those in your congregation.

While there are many sermon topics that would pop-up specific to your congregations needs and climate, here in this article we’d like to share with you some sermon topics that have proven to be timeless for a transformational preaching.

These sermon topics are always relevant, not only to be taught within your own congregation but even if and when you might be invited as a guest speaker at another congregation.

They are not restricted nor bound by the times we live in but are universal truths, relevant across cultures and ages. These would never fail to inspire, encourage, and challenge the listener to grow deeper in their relationship with God.

We hope these topics will help as you prepare for your next sermon.

1. The unconditional love of God

“Unconditional love” in today’s world is a whole lot different from what it truly means to be unconditionally loved. Take your congregation into the wonderful treasures in the Word of God and help them understand this timeless truth of what “the unconditional love of God” truly means and its transformational power in our lives.

2. The abundant grace of God and His free gift of salvation

To understand God’s grace and to accept His free gift of salvation by faith through our repentance is really just the beginning of the most wonderful thing that can ever happen to anyone and everyone who listens and responds to a sermon on this timeless topic. Allow your congregation to glean from the powerful truth of what God’s grace has done for us as you teach on this topic.

3. Faith

“Without faith it is impossible to please God"

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast."

It is the depth of our faith that determines the length of our walk with God. Teaching a sermon on this topic allows you to point out to your congregation the centrality of faith in the life of a Christian. You can also encourage them using the lives of various biblical characters to help them see how faith or the lack of it bore its fruit accordingly in each one’s life.

4. Being forgiven and forgiving another

Offending and being offended is not uncommon in the world we live in today. There is now more than ever before a growing need for forgiveness – to extend and seek forgiveness, alike. The topic of forgiveness will not only allow your congregation to rejoice and accept the forgiveness that God has extended towards us but also joyfully appropriate this forgiveness to those around them.

5. Victory over sin and temptation

The Bible tells us that we were all conceived in sin. Furthermore, we live in a sinful and fallen world that is constantly tugging at us for our attention and allegiance. Within such a context, it is crucial to teach your congregation about the reality of sin and temptations that the Christian is faced with on a day-to-day basis.
