Sermon Topics: 100 Ideas for Every Ocassion
Curated guide on how to develop a good sermon and 100 Sermon topic Ideas for every occasion.
A good Sermon topic is what every Pastor wants to deliver all the time. There will be a particular kind of pressure that comes on a Thursday afternoon when you realize you haven’t figured out or landed on what you're preaching this Sunday or at other events.
Most of the pastors are busy throughout the week – Visits, meetings, and calls that run longer than expected. And suddenly the weekend arrives, and the question remains the same: What am I actually preaching?
A curated guide to choosing and then developing a good sermon topic, followed by 100 Sermon topics with the scripture reference that you can immediately use.
1. Things that make a Sermon Topic Work
Every topic that may sound good might not produce a sermon that will be worth hearing.
They tend to share a few things.
-
The topic needs to come from a passage that will genuinely speak about the subject matters, instead of using scripture to back up some points that the preacher has already decided to make.
-
The topic must be unique and narrow enough so that it actually says something meaningful ( example: what faith looks like if the result doesn’t come) rather than just a broad talk about the world like “faith.”
-
The topic must and will have to focus on what your congregation needs and wants to hear, rather than some deep theory that interests the preacher’s own reading and thinking.
-
Need to have an honest preparation instead of selecting a topic that is simple, and it requires less preparation, is a very poor choice. Your congregations can easily tell the difference when a shortcut is used.
2. Choosing Topics That Serve Your Congregation
-
Always start with your people first, not your ideas. You need to ask yourself, What is my congregation carrying, right? And not What should I preach?
-
Paying attention to the daily realities, you should not just follow the noise from your congregations or preach whatever makes the loudest voice. It basically means paying attention closely during pastoral care, closely observing community events, and making sure to note the questions people ask after the service.
-
You also need to understand the diverse group in your congregations, young adults building careers, parents managing pressures, middle-aged adults going through grief or illness, and older adults facing mortality.
-
Everyone has a different experience, and a sermon calendar will fail if it continues to speak only to a certain age group. The topic must be well curated and must have enough depth to address the question that everyone experiences in different forms.
-
Pastors should never skip, but instead give an honest engagement on the topic, such as Money, Sex, power, doubt, and suffering. Refusing or avoiding such topics will leave your congregation to navigate their unexamined assumptions without biblical guidance.
3. Having a Sermon Calendar
We all, in general, have a Saturday night scramble. This happens when we don't have a proper calendar of what we do.
-
Knowing your topic four weeks in advance allows it to grow naturally over time, instead of being forced in a period of two days. It will change how a pastor reads and help them with relevant details or ideas in daily conversations.
-
Keeping in mind the upcoming event or season (such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, etc.) and then utilizing them from different angles, building deep theological depth.
-
Covering the topic of what Christians believe and why. Such as what is the nature of God, what is the meaning of salvation, what is the work of the holy spirit. These are among the best engaging sermons in a year when they are connected with real life and are handled honestly.
-
Topics of practical life such as money, relationships, work, grief, anxiety, identity, etc. This is where Scripture directly connects with people's lives. They tend to produce more immediate engagement and have the most lasting pastoral impact.
-
Working through a book of the Bible over several weeks. This can force engagement with a passage the preacher may not choose on their own, helping in building the congregation’s familiarity with scripture in a way that topical preaching alone doesn’t
Keep your planning simple by mapping out the year into four to five distinct series that last four to six weeks each. Building this around some of the major seasons of the Christian calendar. Make sure to include at least one practical life series with one expository journey through a shorter book of the Bible.
4. Finding Out Inspiration That Will Not Run Dry
The main topic or the main source of a sermon topic should always be centered around Scripture, not current events with a verse attached, or taking a trending cultural topic and making it sound BIBLICAL. A genuine engagement about what God has actually said, and what it actually means for how people live- that’s what produces sermons with real authority.
A curated resource in a scriptural foundation to draw from, the “collection of Bible Verses About Faith” covers passages across the Old and New Testaments that make useful anchors for a developed sermon.
Ongoing events as an entry point, not agendas
-
The event will raise the questions and let the Scripture answer them. This is the order that matters.
-
Hardship in matters of the economy in the community? This will open up questions about provision, trust, and what security actually matters.
-
A national election? Questions may arise about power, justice, and the limits of what politics can deliver.
The sermon is never about the event; rather, it is just a door into something the Scripture has always addressed.
Your congregation as a source
-
The main source of Sermon ideas is always sitting in front of you every Sunday.
-
Not a survey, but paying attention
-
The question that comes up often in pastoral conversations?
-
Someone is struggling in life, and with what? Patterns like this will tell you more than any brainstorming session will
Congregations that feel heard are those that genuinely tend to stay engaged. That only starts with a pastor who is actually listening.
5. Challenges and How To Handle Them
Running out of ideas
-
Most of the time, it’s almost always a reading problem.
-
Those pastors who always read consistently - history, biography, theology, literature alongside Scripture-rarely run dry.
-
The method is to capture ideas when they surface, never generating them under pressure.
Preaching about the same topics repeatedly
-
Keeping an update of everything that you’ve preached over the last 1 to 2 years
-
Pastors always discover significant gaps when they actually look – books they never went through, the never-addressed life stage, theological topics only skimmed.
-
This update makes the gaps visible.
The pressure of not being relevant
-
Relevance is not a strategy; it is just a byproduct of truth.
-
Those sermons that chase cultural relevance while losing the core Biblical depth will always produce short-term engagement and long-term shallowness.
-
Sermons engaging honestly with the scripture will always be relevant in ways the preacher does not anticipate, simply because the scripture addresses the human conditions more accurately than current trends will do.
Having a Diverse congregation
-
Build the topic at the level of the underlying human question, not specific circumstances
-
A sermon on waiting reaches the person waiting for a diagnosis, a relationship, and a career breakthrough – without being so general that it reaches no one specifically.
The scramble on Saturday night
-
Planning, be it a rough draft, will eliminate most of your pressure.
-
You just need a simple direction, not a complete outline.
-
Always know what series you’re in and what territory you will be covering.
